How do I buy a racehorse in France?
As a U.K.-based bloodstock agent, with over 350 winners to date, I’ve had the pleasure of helping many clients purchase racehorses in France, notably high-class chasers Le Milos (winner of the 2022 Hennessy) and Saint Palais. Having spent much of my life in France and being fluent in French certainly helps!
The French racing scene offers a wealth of opportunities. Thanks to its lucrative prize money and the added benefits of owners’ premiums, the breeding industry continues to thrive and ensures that young stock in France continue to be very attractive to purchase for the UK and Ireland.
Whether you’re looking to buy at auction or privately, there are several avenues to explore. I have included a few options below, but please get in touch to discuss what might suit you best.
Arqana Sales
One of the premier destinations for purchasing a racehorse anywhere in Europe is Arqana, based in Deauville. Arqana is renowned for offering top quality, from yearlings to horses in training, as well as broodmares. The August and October Yearling Sales, in particular, attract international attention as regards the flat, featuring some of the best bloodlines in Europe. The National Hunt sales are in July and November and, having attended these sales regularly, I can provide clients with expert advice on identifying horses with the potential to succeed under either code. I work closely with trainers, breeders, and consignors to assess the stock on offer and secure the best possible purchases for my clients.
Osarus Sales
Another option is the Osarus Sales, which are typically held in the southwest of France, near Bordeaux. Osarus offers a slightly more affordable market compared to Arqana, making it a great choice for owners and syndicates looking to invest at a more modest level without compromising on quality. The sales offer yearlings, horses in training, and breeze-up horses. My deep knowledge of the French racing and breeding scene, combined with my network of contacts, allows me to identify value purchases that have the potential to excel on the track.
Auctav Sales
Auctav is a hybrid sales company, with on-site sales as well as regular online sales. There are regular opportunities to purchase horses in training on the site, many of which have gone on to do very well in the UK & Ireland. I can arrange to inspect horses in person that are catalogued in the online sales and, if neccessary, organise pre-purchase vettings.
Buying Privately
In addition to auctions, buying privately is another route that I frequently look at for clients. This option often allows for more flexibility and negotiation in terms of price and terms. I use my strong connections with breeders, trainers, and owners across France to identify horses that may not yet be on the open market but are available for private sale. My fluency in French ensures smooth communication, and I manage all aspects of the process, from initial inquiries to vetting and negotiating the final sale, as well as transport to the UK and Ireland if required.
